 Delegation & Decentralization of Authority





Delegation - 

  • It means authorizing another person to take decision on one's behalf
  • Delegation does not mean absolving one's overall responsibility 
  • Proper use of delegation helps one to pay attention to more important activities 
  • It helps in developing subordinates 

Advantages of Delegation- 

  1. The hallmark of good supervision is effective delegation 
  2. Delegation is when supervisors give responsibility & authority to subordinate to complete a task
  3. Effective delegation develops people who are ultimately more fulfilled and productive 
  4. Managers become more fulfilled and productive themselves as they learned to count on their staffs and are freed up to attend more strategic issue

General steps to accomplish delegation - 

  1. Delegate the whole task to one person
  2. Select the right person
  3. Clearly specify your preferred results
  4. Delegate responsibility and authority

Decentralization of Authority - 

Decentralization of Authority is an organizational concept which takes decision making to the lower levels of organization 

Effective Decentralization requires - 

  1. Proper balance between centralization and decentralization
  2. Centralize authority to decide proper decentralization , coordination and to resolve its problems 
  3. Good number of competent managers 
  4. Effective and speedy communication
  5. Adequate controls to distribute resources , assign costs , lay downs standards and norms
  6. Willingness of the top management to penetrate the authority downward

Factors Determining Decentralization are - 

  1. Size & complexity of the organization
  2. History of the organization
  3. Nature of Functions 
  4. Scattered operations of the production
  5. Planning and control procedures 
  6. Degree of diversification
  7. Complexities of situation
  8. Availability of competent personnel 
  9. Communication of system
  10. Outlook of the top management
