Chemical & Process Safety Management > Chapter-3 > Topic- Safe Handling of Chemicals > Sub Topic- Use of Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and understanding the terminologies used in MSDS
Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)- Use , Terminologies ,Statutory Requirements as per Indian Law
Each person involved in handling dangerous substances or preparations should be provided with written instructions on the properties of the chemicals, including illustrations and pictograms. These safety instructions and information should be collected and stored in a place easily accessible at the workplace.
Every chemical container and package in the workplace, no matter how small or big, should have an appropriate, clearly understandable label.
Due to the lack of space, the information on the label on each container or package is often incomplete. It is, therefore, necessary to have access to more detailed information or instructions for the safe use of chemicals.
A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is a document that provides detailed information about a hazardous substance or chemical. It is typically provided by the manufacturer, importer or supplier of the substance, and serves as an important source of information for workers who may be exposed to the substance in the workplace.
The primary purpose of an MSDS is to communicate information about the hazards associated with a particular substance and to provide guidance on how to handle and use it safely.
Contents of the MSDS are different as per different standards , Country wise legislation.
ILO recommended points are as follows (16 Points of MSDS) -
1. Identification of the substance/preparation and the company/undertake
2. Composition/information on ingredients
3. Hazard identification
4. First aid measures
5. Firefighting
6. Spillage, accidental release
7. Handling and storage
8. Exposure controls/personal protection
9. Physical and chemical properties
10. Stability and reactivity
11. Toxicological information
12. Ecological information
13. Disposal considerations
14. Transport information
15. Regulatory information
16. Other information
Statutory Requirement of MSDS as per Indian Law
In India, MSDS contain 9 Sections listed under Schedule 9 of Rule 17 of “The Manufacture, Storage and Import of Hazardous Chemicals Rule, (MSIHC) 1989”.
Format of MSDS under Schedule 9 of the MSIHC Rules, 1989
